Disabilities
Disabilities occur when one's ability to perform a common action or activity is impaired. Normal situations and everyday tasks become tough to conquer in a person's life. Some of the most common disabilities include sensory, physical, mental, or self-care impairments which disturb a person’s ability to perform on a daily basis. The limitations that exist on an individual’s activities by disabilities can vary significantly depending on the category of impairment and the severity of one’s situation. Disabilities often come in combination with other disabilities that effect many aspects of an individual’s livelihood, regardless of whether those aspects are directly connected to the disabilities or not.
According to the US Census Bureau an estimated 77 million people are living with disabilities in the United States today. The majority of these individuals range in age from 16 and 64 (45 million), while the remaining people were over the age of 64 (28 million) or younger than 16 (3.5 million).
Generally speaking, there are four types of disabilities that can hinder a person’s ability to function to some degree: physical, mental, sensory and self-care. Physical disabilities can impair one's ability to do basic functions such as walking or standing, while mental disabilities relate to an individual's cognitive or psychological health which can cause conditions like memory lapse, learning disabilities or trouble concentrating. More dramatic mental problems can exist such as overall mood, anxiety levels and personality. As the name would suggest, sensory disabilities cause an impairment of the basic senses (vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch). Self-care disabilities are those that hinder an individual's ability to achieve tasks like dressing, general hygiene or just getting around the house.
